Bangladeshi anti–Indian hegemonic politician
Sharif Osman Bin Hadi (Bengali: শরীফ ওসমান বিন হাদি), better known as Osman Hadi was a Bangladeshi activist.[1][2][3][4][5] He was one of the founders and was serving as the spokesperson of the political platform Inquilab Mancha. Following the July Revolution in Bangladesh, he emerged as a prominent figure in youth-led movements, known for his active political stance against Indian hegemony in Bangladesh, his advocacy for the rights of the July martyrs, and his role in the Awami League ban movement.[6][7][8]
On 12 December 2025, he was shot in the Box Culvert area of Bijoynagar in Dhaka. He died on 18 December while undergoing treatment.[9]
Early life and education
Osman Hadi was born in Nalchity Upazila of Jhalokathi District into a Muslim family. His father was a madrasa teacher and a local imam. Hadi was the youngest of six siblings. He grew up in a religious educational environment.[1]
He began his formal education at the Jhalakati N S Kamil Madrasa, where he completed the Alim level before enrolling in the Department of Political Science at the University of Dhaka.[1]
Activism
During the July Revolution, Hadi was a resident of Rampura in Dhaka. He participated in local organizational activities and served as the coordinator for the Rampura area.[6]
Inquilab Mancha
Inquilab Mancha is a youth and uprising inspired platform that emerged from the students and citizens mobilisation around the July protests in Bangladesh. The organisation’s stated aims include defending the country’s independence and sovereignty, opposing all forms of domination, and building an “Insaaf-based state”.[10][11]
Hadi is repeatedly identified in media as the spokesperson or convenor of the platform.[6][12][7]
July Revolution and youth alliances
Osman Hadi was an active participant in the July Revolution. Following the protests, Hadi emerged as one of the visible young organisers demanding accountability for protest-related deaths. He accused certain opposition groups of attempting to dominate the movement and criticised what he characterised as corruption among some youth political leaders.[13]
Inquilab Mancha joined a broader network of youth platforms and alliances calling for accountability for protest-related killings and for a ban on the Awami League. Several reports have identified Inquilab Moncho as part of the “July Unity coalition”, a grouping of youth and civil society platforms formed in the aftermath of the July protests[14]
Hadi publicly criticised other opposition platforms, including the National Citizen Party, alleging that they have tried to “monopolise” the July uprising and that some leaders have become corrupt.[13][15]
Demands to ban the Awami League
Hadi and Inquilab Mancha have repeatedly called for the Awami League to be banned “constitutionally” from politics, arguing that the party is responsible for repression and protest-related killings.[16] At a “martyrs’ assembly” in Shahbagh, he urged political parties to include the trial and banning of the Awami League in their election manifestos and announced plans for a “March for Bangladesh” towards the Secretariat if their demands were not met within 100 days.[7]
In other statements he framed himself and his organisation as uncompromising opponents of “fascism” and argued that July protesters should not allow the ruling party to regain political legitimacy.[17]
Call for a National government
On 24 May 2025, Inquilab Mancha held a press conference at the University of Dhaka, where Hadi called for a “National government” inclusive of all Anti-fascist forces, explicitly naming the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Islami Andolan Bangladesh and others.[18][6] Earlier, at a human chain in front of the Bangladesh National Museum in Shahbagh, Hadi announced a continuous sit-in programme with five demands, including the arrest of activist Lucky Akter, investigations into past killings and a ban on the Awami League.[12]
Positions on other political parties
Hadi commented on wider opposition politics, stating in one televised discussion that “politics is essentially about bargaining” in the context of reported talks between the National Citizen Party and Gono Odhikar Parishad on a possible merger.[19][20]
Views on the BNP and traditional politics
At a press conference held at the Madhur Canteen of the University of Dhaka in July 2025, Sharif Osman Hadi stated that if the Bangladesh Nationalist Party returned to power while continuing what he described as ‘old-style’ politics, the party would not remain in office for even two years.[21] He emphasised the need for a people-centred political approach and warned that the public would not accept a parliament that, in his words, merely passes ‘anti-national laws’.
Public statements and media coverage
Hadi frequently uses social media and public speeches to comment on political developments. In July 2025, Hadi as spokesperson, demanded the arrest of activist Lucky Akter and called for investigations into alleged massacres.[12]
He also addressed issues such as alleged “disinformation” about disappeared bodies, arguing that certain campaigns constitute a conspiracy against the state and that mass killings cannot easily be concealed in contemporary Bangladesh.[22][23][24]
Political career
2026 general election
In 2025, he announced his candidacy for the Dhaka-8 constituency in the national parliamentary election as an independent politician.[25]
Ahead of the 2026 Bangladeshi general election, Hadi announced that he would contest the Dhaka-8 seat as an independent candidate. He declared plans for community-level meetings and neighbourhood consultations and later conducted campaign activities including rallies and public speeches. He stated that, if elected, he intended to confront corruption in parliament.
Hadi invited residents of the constituency to participate in his “electoral journey” and consultation meetings in different neighbourhoods.[25][10] During the campaign period he conducted a “van rally” in central Dhaka, using sharply critical rhetoric towards other MPs and promising to expose corruption if elected.[26]
Works
In 2024, Hadi published a poetry collection named “Lavay Lalshak Puber Akash” (Firy feast of Eastern Sky) from Duar Publications in the pen name Shimanta Sharif.[27][28][29]
Assassination
On December 12, 2025, at approximately 2:25 PM (BST), Osman Hadi was shot in the jaw by assailants on a motorcycle in the Paltan area of the capital while leaving a mosque. The assailants were identified as Faisal Karim Masud and Alamgir Sheikh. Another person named Rubel was also involved in surveiling Hadi before their attack. Masud shot Hadi and Alamagir was driving the motorcycle.[30][31][32][33][34]
Following the attack, which occurred shortly after Jumma prayers, Hadi was rushed to the emergency department at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.[31][35] After that, he was taken to the One-Stop Emergency Center of the hospital, where he was in a coma with a GCS score of 3 and was experiencing Mydriasis. After that, he was taken to the neurosurgery department, where his cardiopulmonary resuscitation procedure was performed.[36] Then he was transferred to Evercare Hospital Dhaka for better treatment.[36] On 15 December, the government decided to airlift Hadi to Singapore General Hospital for better treatment.[32]
On 17 December, Singapore’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Vivian Balakrishnan, visited Hadi in the hospital and later called the Chief Adviser of Bangladesh, Muhammad Yunus, to inform him that Hadi was in a “very critical” condition.[37]
He breathed his last from his injuries at Singapore General Hospital on 18 December 2025 at 9:30 PM..[34][38][39][40]
Threats
Hadi previously reported receiving death threats through phone calls and messages, including threats to set fire to his home and harm female family members.[41][42][43] He stated that such threats would not deter him from activism.[44][45]
Criticism
In 2025, following clashes during the National Citizen Party’s March to Gopalganj campaign, he sharply criticised the situation using profanity and called for the dissolution of Gopalganj District, which generated widespread controversy and public debate.[46][47][48] Later, amid criticism, he described his outburst as a ‘epic of liberation’ and expressed regret to anyone who may have been offended.[49]
