English cricketer
Simon Richard George Francis (born 15 August 1978) is an English former cricketer, currently Director of Cricket at Warwick School.[1]
Early life
Francis was born at Bromley in Kent in August 1978. He was educated firstly at Yardley Court preparatory school in Tonbridge, and after his parents relocated to Southampton he attended King Edward VI School.[2] where he was educated at King Edward VI School. From there, he matriculated to Durham University.[2] In youth level cricket, Francis played a Youth One Day International for the England Under-19’s against Pakistan Under-19’s in January 1997.[3]
Cricket
Early career at Hampshire
In the 1997 season, Francis made his senior debut for Hampshire in a List A one-day match against Sussex in the Axa Life League,[4] and following this he made his first-class debut against Worcestershire at Southampton in the County Championship.[5] While studying at Durham University, he played two first-class matches for the British Universities cricket team against the touring Sri Lankans and South Africans in 1998, and one first-class match against the touring New Zealanders in 1999;[5] he toured South Africa with the British Universities side following the 1999 season, at which point he was studying at the Bournemouth University.[6]
Two years after he had last played for Hampshire’s first eleven, Francis returned to the team in July 1999 for their County Championship match against Lancashire.[7] He made two further Championship appearances in 1999,[5] alongside four one-day appearances in the CGU National League.[4]
Move to Somerset
He moved to Somerset for the 2002 season. However, appearances for the first XI became less frequent and Francis was released at the end of the 2006 season. He was signed by Nottinghamshire early in the 2007 season, which proved to be his final year in professional cricket.
Francis also toured with England A in India in 2003-04[8] and appeared in one Youth One-Day International, coming in January 1997 on the England Under-19s‘ tour of Pakistan. He also represented England at hockey at Under-18 level.[9]
Capable of bowling at a brisk pace.[10]
Francis’s brother, John, is also a former first-class cricketer, having played similarly for Hampshire and Somerset.
