Life
His father was Stephen Smith Adam (17 May 1819 – 25 May 1889), a wool merchant from Falkirk.
His mother was Helen Rowley Smith (1823 – 19 February 1883), an artist from St. Ninians, Stirling.
Robert Smith Adam was born on 10 October 1850 in Leith, Edinburgh.
He married Ann Elizabeth Jeffreys (2 June 1854 – 26 April 1935) from Hastings, Sussex, England. They married on 26 January 1876 in Hanover Square in London, England.
