| This is the sandbox page where you will draft your initial Wikipedia contribution.
If you’re starting a new article, you can develop it here until it’s ready to go live. If you’re working on improvements to an existing article, copy only one section at a time of the article to this sandbox to work on, and be sure to use an edit summary linking to the article you copied from. Do not copy over the entire article. You can find additional instructions here. Remember to save your work regularly using the “Publish page” button. (It just means ‘save’; it will still be in the sandbox.) You can add bold formatting to your additions to differentiate them from existing content. |
DARPA, or the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, is a U.S. government agency that funds and develops high-risk, high-reward technology to keep the country ahead in science and national security. It started in 1958 as ARPA after the Soviets launched Sputnik I, which surprised the U.S. and made it clear they needed to catch up in tech.
Over the years, DARPA has been behind some really important innovations, like ARPANET (the early internet), self-driving cars, AI research, and robotics. It’s known for being flexible and moving fast to tackle new technology challenges.
DARPA began as ARPA in February 1958 because the U.S. wanted to keep up with the Soviets after Sputnik I. President Eisenhower set it up to make sure America stayed ahead in science and technology during the Cold War.
At first, ARPA focused on space programs, missile defense, and tracking nuclear tests. When NASA was created later in 1958, most space programs moved there, and ARPA shifted to other high-risk research like computers, AI, and military technology.
The agency has changed names a few times. It became DARPA, switched back to ARPA for a few years in the 1990s, and then went back to DARPA. Its flexible way of running things helped it adapt quickly to new challenges, which is a big reason it’s been so influential in tech.
