Mothe Srilatha Reddy (also spelled as, Mote Srilatha Reddy) (also known as, Mothe Srilatha Shoban Reddy) is an Indian politician who has been serving as Deputy Mayor of Hyderabad since from 21 February 2021.
Early life and background
[edit]
Mothe Srilatha Reddy is a law graduate.[1] She is married to senior TRS leader Mothe Shoban Reddy, who is one of the founder members of the party.[2] Her political journey was inspired by seeing her father-in-law, Mote Shobhan Reddy, work for the people.[1] She has emphasised a “love for the soil” and connecting with the citizens as central to her political philosophy.[1]
Corporator of Tarnaka
[edit]
Reddy serves as the corporator of Tarnaka Division since from 2016.[2] During her tenure, she was known for hands-on work resolving civic issues, planting trees and setting up a blood donation camp during the COVID-19 pandemic.[1]
Election as Deputy Mayor
[edit]
On 11 February 2021, Mothe Srilatha Reddy was elected as the Deputy Mayor of Hyderabad.[3][4] She was elected as a candidate of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS, later renamed BRS) alongside Mayor Gadwal Vijayalaxmi, marking the first time in GHMC history that both mayor and deputy mayor posts were occupied by women corporators.[2][5] She formally assumed charge as Deputy Mayor on 22 February 2021.[6]
Upon being elected, she stated: “I am thankful to Chief Minister KCR, KTR and my MLA for choosing me. I have been working since the beginning and because of this I have been chosen today. I am really happy”.[5]
Defection to Indian National Congress
[edit]
On 24 February 2024, Reddy and her husband announced their resignation from the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), citing that recent decisions by the party had “deeply pained them” and that “people who fought for Telangana statehood are finding it difficult to survive” in the party.[7][8]
