In Islam, God sent Prophets and Messengers as perfect examples for humanity to follow. Therefore, their characters are divinely protected from specific flaws, meaning they are infallible. The core belief outlined is that certain attributes are obligatory (must be affirmed for all prophets), others are impossible (must be negated), and others are permissible (can be affirmed as they do not contradict prophethood).
| Necessary attributes: | Impossible attributes:[Note 1] |
| 1. Truthfulness: Prophets are always truthful in their speech and actions. They never lie about the message from God or anything else. | 1. Lying: The opposite of Truthfulness. It is impossible for a prophet to lie. |
| 2. Trustworthiness: They are perfectly honest, trustworthy, and utterly reliable, incapable of betrayal or committing any act forbidden by God. | 2. Treachery: The opposite of Trustworthiness. They cannot betray the trust God has placed in them or commit sins, whether major (like adultery) or minor. This is a core Islamic belief known as ‘Ismah (infallibility/protection from sin). |
| 3. Conveying the Message: They perfectly deliver God’s message to people without hiding, altering, or neglecting any part of it. | 3. Concealing the Message: The opposite of Conveying. They cannot hide any part of the divine revelation they were commanded to deliver. |
