Rara (Spanish for “weird”) is the debut studio album by Argentine singer-songwriter Juana Molina, released in 1996 by MCA Records. Prior to launching her musical career, Molina had established herself in the 1990s as one of the country’s most popular comedians, particularly through her television program Juana y sus hermanas.
Background and composition
Interviewed on the occasion of the release of her third album Tres cosas in 2002, by which time the musical identity for which she is best known was already established, she recalled: “When I recorded Rara, everything was more complicated. I put together a band, we spent months rehearsing, and we recorded a series of demos that sounded really bad. What eventually ended up being released had little to do with the original concept. At that time, making an album from a demo was unthinkable. Since I’ve had a computer, anything can become an album without anyone else’s involvement.”[1]
Release and reception
The commercial performance of Rara failed to meet the expectations of both the production team and Molina herself, who later described it as a “great failure” in interviews.[2]
Writing in 2013, Micaela Ortelli of Página/12 felt that the album was poorly marketed and noted: “No Argentine radio station ever played a song from that album—too pop to be folk and too folk, perhaps, to be radio-friendly (…).”[3]
