The Albums Chart is a weekly record chart based on album sales from Sunday to Saturday; during the 1990s, a total of 71 albums reached number one. The most successful artist of the 1990s was American singer and actress Cher, who topped the Albums Chart for 42 weeks with five different albums. Titanic: Music from the Motion Picture, the soundtrack of the 1997 movie Titanic, composed, orchestrated, and conducted by James Horner, was the biggest-selling album of 1998; it was also the biggest-selling album of the decade. The first number-one album of the 1990s was …But Seriously by English musician Phil Collins – released in 1989, it first reached number one in December, and remained at the top for twelve consecutive weeks. The final number one of the 1990s was the compilation album The Greatest Hits (1999) by Cher.

Titanic: Music from the Motion Picture (1997) by American composer James Horner was the biggest-selling album of the decade; it spent 21 consecutive weeks at the top of Albums Chart in 1998, longer than any other album. It became and currently remains the best-selling soundtrack album in music history.
The Immaculate Collection (1990) by American singer and songwriter Madonna, was the second best-selling album of the 1990s. It is also the all time best-selling album released by a female artist.
American entertainer Cher spent 60 weeks at the top of the Albums Chart with 6 different releases, the most for any artist. Cher also had the most albums in the top 20 best-selling of the decade, with a total of three: Love Hurts (1991), Believe (1998) and Heart of Stone (1989) at number 6, 9 and 19 respectively.
Canadian singer Céline Dion had the fifth best-selling album of the decade with Let’s Talk About Love (1997), which is also the second best-selling album by a female act. Dion also spent 50 weeks at the top of the Albums Chart, the second most.
