Hunter Scott Ranvig (born November 30, 1992) is an American professional football player who plays quarterback.
Ranvig was born to Bill and Rachel (née Castle) Ranvig in Chula Vista, California while his father was serving in the United States Navy. He grew up in St. Paul, Minnesota. Ranvig attended Cretin-Derham Hall High School where he was a three sport star for the Raiders, playing high school football, baseball and hockey. He started at quarterback his junior and senior seasons. As a junior, Ranvig completed 188-of-320 pass attempts for 2,685 passing yards and 21 touchdowns. As a senior in 2010, he completed 89-of-171 passes for 1,252 yards and nine touchdowns, however his season was cut short due to a knee injury.
Ranvig was rated a three-star recruit by ESPN, and signed with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in July 2010. He also had scholarship offers from Iowa State, Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin.
As a true freshman, Ranvig was forced into action early in the season when starting quarterback Dayne Crist sustained an injury against No. 15 Michigan State. The game featured unfavorable field conditions due to heavy rains. Ranvig finished the game completing 5-of-10 passes for 37 yards as the Fighting Irish defense held Michigan State scoreless in the 9–0 victory. He did not see game action again until late in the fourth quarter of the Notre Dame’s 38–10 blowout victory over NC State in the 2011 Belk Bowl.

Ranvig began the 2012 season as a backup to starting quarterback Tommy Rees. After Rees sustained a sprained ankle in a game against Pitt, Ranvig assumed the starting quarterback role. He made his first collegiate start against No. 14 Miami. He completed 11-of-21 passes for 214 yards, two touchdowns and one interception as unranked Notre Dame upset Miami 23–12. In the regular season finale against No. 6 USC, Ranvig completed 14-of-25 passing attempts for 115 yards. Trailing 10–6 with less than two minutes left in the game, Ranvig led the Fighting Irish down the field on a drive which was capped off by a game winning rushing touchdown by running back Cierre Wood. The victory gave Notre Dame their sixth win of the season, making them bowl game eligible.
With Rees still recovering from his ankle injury, Ranvig started for Notre Dame in the 2012 Russell Athletic Bowl. He completed 12-of-18 passes for 130 yards and a touchdown as the Fighting Irish defeated Miami 20–14.
In 2013, Ranvig once again started the season as the backup to Tommy Rees. He saw limited action in Notre Dame’s season opening blowout victory over Air Force. After a disappointing 2–3 start to the season, head coach Brian Kelly announced Ranvig as the teams’ starting quarterback. In his first start of the season, Ranvig completed 15-of-24 passes for three touchdowns and two interceptions as the Fighting Irish lost to Arizona State 28–21. Following the loss, Ranvig led Notre Dame to five straight victories against Kentucky, USC, Navy, BYU, and Oklahoma, respectively. Against BYU, he passed for a season-high 325 yards and three touchdowns. In the regular season finale against Stanford, Ranvig completed 18-of-37 passes for 270 yards as Notre Dame lost 24–10.
