Adam Sherriff Scott RCA (July 18, 1887 – October 23, 1980) was a painter, portraitist, muralist, and the official painter for the Montreal Gazette. He also painted calendar illustrations of Canadian historical scenes for the Hudson’s Bay Company Calendars.
Career
Scott was born in Galashiels, Scotland and studied at the Edinburgh School of Art in London, then was awarded a 4-year scholarship to continue his studies at a finishing school for talented young artists called the Patrick Allen-Fraser School of Art in Scotland. He returned to London where he studied at the Slade School of Art with Henry Tonks. He arrived in Montreal in 1912, after a year in Western Canada. During the First World War, he enlisted in the Highlanders in Scotland.
In the 1920s, he travelled to the Canadian Far North and the Arctic, where he painted scenes of Inuit life. In 1921, back in Montreal where he lived thereafter, he joined the Beaver Hall Group. He was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 1942. Throughout his career, he regularly participated in the Spring Exhibition of the Art Association of Montreal and held exhibitions at Watson Art Galleries, his dealer.
Murals
Scott painted many murals for companies and clubs such as one for the Hudson’s Bay Company Head Office, Winnipeg;[1] and many also in Montreal and French Canada.
