The FEVE 1900 Series[a] or Renfe 619 Series[b] is a Spanish meter-gauge hybrid locomotive, manufactured by Ferrocarriles Españoles de Vía Estrecha (FEVE). Seventeen locomotives were built in total, originally rebuilt from withdrawn FEVE 1000 Series locomotives.
Background
As a result of Spain’s Ministry of Development 2000-2007 infrastructure plan, railroad infrastructure was being upgraded. FEVE was modernizing several locomotive classes, and had invested over €17,500,000 in building new locomotives.[1]
The FEVE 1000 Series–a diesel locomotive built from 1955 to 1967 by the French manufacturer Alstom–was being withdrawn from service due to its age. FEVE repurposed the parts of the withdrawn 1000 Series locomotives to build the 1900 Series locomotives.[2][3]: 32 Several companies assisted FEVE in the production of the Series 1900 locomotives, including Siemens, Caterpillar Inc., Suncove, and Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles. The Series 1900 locomotives were fitted with a new body, new pneumatic and electrical equipment, and Siemens engines.[3]: 32

History
The 1900 Series was built as a hybrid locomotive (Spanish: locomotora dual; ‘dual locomotive‘); it could run on electricity from overhead lines through pantographs, or from an onboard diesel engine.[5]: 14 [1]: 4 The use of hybrid locomotives were uncommon on railways when the locomotive was first conceived.[1]: 4 The locomotives were intended for both freight operations and the tourist train Transcantábrico.[6][1]: 4 The 1900 Series locomotives also carried coils on the Euskotren line from the Aceraila rolling mill in Avilés, Asturias, to Lasarte station in Guipúzcoa.[1]: 5
The first locomotive, numbered 1901, was built from a 1000 Series locomotive, starting production in 2001 and registered in September 2002. The locomotive was painted in the livery of the Transcantábrico. The locomotive underwent test runs in Valmaseda and Asturias, and entered service in December of the same year.[1]: 4
The next nine locomotives, numbered 1902–1910, were rebuilt at the Sunsundegui workshops in Alsasua, from 2002 to 2003.[7]: 3 [2][1]: 4 The last seven locomotives, numbered 1911–1917, were built and registered from June to July 2004.[2]
