The Getaway Syndicate is an upcoming book Novel series by L.F. Hernandez, and the project slated for publication in August 12, 2027. The series has undergone several conceptual transformations and title changes since its inception, reflecting a dynamic and often turbulent development process.
Origins as Colt & Kai & My Best Friends are Next Door (2024–2025)
[edit]
The project began in late December 2024 under the working title Colt & Kai. Initially envisioned as a serialized comic or animated concept, the story centered around two neighboring friends navigating adolescence. Despite early enthusiasm, the project faced numerous creative conflicts and scheduling delays throughout early 2025.
Following the collapse of the initial plan, the project was briefly rebranded as My Best Friends Are Next Door. This iteration retained the core characters but shifted toward a more slice-of-life tone.
In May 2025, the original plan was abandoned due to unresolved disagreements among collaborators and logistical setbacks. The concept was condensed into a single comic issue, marking the end of the Colt & Kai phase.
Although, In November 2024, Before the next project, A another Book called “Buck & Brutus, had Similar traits to Colt & Kai.
Revival as The Getaway Syndicate (2025–Present)
[edit]
In October 2025, the project was revived with a new thematic direction and the working title Lakeport Shadows. This version introduces Jace a 12 year old boy exploring a darker, more atmospheric narrative set in the fictional town of Lakeport, blending elements of mystery, friendship, and supernatural intrigue.
The creative team behind The Getaway Syndicate has committed to a long-term development timeline, with plans to publish the completed work in August 2027. The project is currently in the writing and illustration phase, with early concept art and story outlines being finalized.
In a world where humans and anthropomorphic animals co-exist, Less anthropomorphic animals are mentioned in this book while their are more humans.
- Intro of Jace (Ch 1) This talks about the past of Jace’s life of the struggles he’s been through until 12.
- Surroundings (Ch. 2–8) Known as The Fallen Legend, DeLuca is a former criminal who becomes Jace’s mentor and eventually his friend. Jace sneaks out of Ms. Steiner’s apartment at night to join DeLuca in mischief, symbolizing his growing attraction to danger.
- The Halesford Jewelry Store Robbery (Ch. 9–12) The climax of the story centers on a high-stakes heist. This event forces Jace to confront the consequences of his choices and decide between Ms. Steiner’s world of redemption and DeLuca’s world of crime.
As of 2025, I am actively working on both the plots and the manuscript for my book. This stage of development is exciting but also challenging, as I’m balancing creativity with structure. On the very first day of December, I was fortunate to connect with two friendly collaborators whom I know well. Their support has already made the process feel less solitary and more collaborative, and I look forward to seeing how their perspectives will help shape the project.
Current Progress (November-December 2025)
[edit]
My immediate milestone is to have Chapters 1–6 completed as a final draft by December 31, 2025. These chapters form the foundation of the story, and reaching this point will give me confidence that the narrative is strong enough to build upon. I’ve already gone through several rewrites (sometimes more than I expected — oops!), so this draft will represent a version I can move forward with rather than constantly revisiting.
Upcoming Milestones (January-April 2026)
[edit]
- April 2026: My plan is to finish the second section of the book, which includes the remaining chapters. This timeline may seem ambitious, but the reason is simple: I want to share the manuscript with readers early enough to gather feedback.
- August 2027: This is my broader target for completion. By then, I hope to have incorporated feedback, refined the manuscript, and prepared it for the next stage — whether that’s publication, further editing, or simply sharing it with a wider audience.
Writing is not just about putting words on paper; it’s about creating something that resonates with others. That’s why I’m eager to find people who love to read and are willing to provide honest feedback. Their insights will help me identify strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities to make the story more engaging. By setting earlier deadlines, I’m giving myself time to listen, reflect, and improve before the final version is ready.
For now, there will be a manuscript version available. This manuscript is essentially a working draft — a snapshot of what the book will look like at this stage. It may not be identical to the final published version, and that’s perfectly normal. Writing is a process of evolution, and changes are part of the journey. So don’t be surprised if the manuscript differs from the finished book; it’s all part of refining the story into its best possible form.
Beyond deadlines and drafts, my vision is to create a book that feels meaningful, both to me and to readers. I want it to be a story that people can connect with, whether through its characters, themes, or the emotions it evokes. The development process is not just about finishing chapters — it’s about building something lasting.
Visuals, design, and influences
[edit]
A group of artists is planning a creative collective specializing in visual design and illustration. The collective produces book covers, logos, character artwork, and other forms of graphic design for literary and entertainment projects. This will go to December 2025 – July 2026.
On December 1, 2025, L.F Hernandez, V. Barajas, & K. Beard were the first group of making the project.
A few inspirations on Characters are Ms. Steiner who was based on a real teacher named Leeanna Shultz, a High School Spanish teacher.
The plot is inspired by real-life events in Chicago during that time and incorporates elements from certain Grand Theft Auto missions. For example, in Chapter 3, the missions “Luigi’s Girls” and “Don’t Spank Ma Bitch Up” share notable similarities with the book.
Jace is Based on Mr. Wolf but…
It has been announced to be release on August 12, 2027.
The Getaway Syndicate explores themes of identity, trust, and the unknown. The visual style is expected to blend moody, cinematic tones with expressive character design, drawing inspiration from indie graphic novels and psychological thrillers.
The creators aim to release The Getaway Syndicate as a limited-run book series, with potential for expansion into digital formats depending on reception. previews are expected to be released in mid-2026.
So far, this is the List for the Book. More will be added!
Main Character(s)
Foil
- Mr. DeLuca – Jace’s Mentor & Former Criminal (Chapters 3-12)
- Rolf Goldstein – Businessman Mafia, He owns “The Boots” casino, upscale bars, and luxury lounges around Lakeport — all “legitimate” businesses that secretly launder money and host shady deals. (Chapters 3-12)
- Miyu Shimizu – A gang lieutenant/boss, elegant and calculating. She provides missions, resources, and protection — but her loyalty is conditional. (Chapters 6-12)
- Lilian Petrescu is a Romanian expatriate who became Miyu Shimizu’s closest confidante and partner in the syndicate. Unlike Miyu’s disciplined, calculating nature, Lilian is impulsive and flamboyant, often stirring chaos in the nightlife scene while still proving fiercely loyal. She manages the social and financial fronts of Miyu’s operations — clubs, parties, and laundering networks — making her indispensable despite her recklessness. Their partnership blends Miyu’s cold precision with Lilian’s unpredictable charm, creating a dangerous balance of order and chaos. Lilian’s loyalty is unquestionable, but her impulsive streak makes her both Miyu’s greatest strength and her most vulnerable weakness. (Chapters 6-12)
- Lucia – the volatile boss of a modern cartel, introduced in Chapter 4 as a rising power. she is unpredictable, ruthless, Insulting, and thrives on chaos, using intimidation and sudden violence to keep rivals off balance. Her feud with Miyu Shimizu quickly becomes personal, escalating into threats of murder and sabotage. Unlike the old-school mobsters, Lucia represents a new breed of crime — fast, profit-driven, and unrestrained. By Chapter 12, she stands as a dangerous antagonist, a survivor who refuses to be outplayed. (Chapters 4-12)
- Jordan Pierce – Getaway Driver (Chapters 11-12)
- Dante Cruz – Mastermind / Enforcer (Chapters 11-12)
- Camila Romano – The Smart Hacker (Chapters 11-12)
- Silvio Mancini – a aging Italian-American mob boss who clung to the old ways of loyalty and intimidation. Operating out of his fading social club near The Boots casino, he saw Rolf Goldstein’s flashy empire as a threat to tradition. His paranoia drove him to terrorize Goldstein’s business, sending muscle and making violent threats. In Chapter 11, Silvio was betrayed and cornered, ultimately shot in cold blood. His death marked the collapse of the old mob era, clearing the path for modern crime figures to rise. (Chapters 4-11)
- Diego Morales – a charismatic leader of a Latino street gang, known for his loyalty to his crew and sharp ambition. He controls car theft rings, drug distribution, and street-level muscle, giving him strong influence in the city’s neighborhoods. In Chapter 4, he aligns with Lucia’s cartel, providing her with local power while gaining access to her international smuggling networks. Together, they form a dangerous alliance that challenges both Rolf Goldstein’s casino empire and Miyu Shimizu’s syndicate. Diego’s mix of charisma and ruthlessness makes him a vital partner to Lucia and a formidable rival to anyone who stands in their way. (Chapters 4-12)
- Vincent “Lucky Vince” Moretti – the slick gambler who runs underground poker dens and betting rings across the city. Charismatic but perpetually in debt, he survives by selling secrets and fixing games for whoever pays him most. Goldstein keeps Vince close, using him as a low-level fixer and informant inside The Boots casino. Though unreliable, Vince’s charm and connections make him useful for manipulating rival gangs and funneling cash through Goldstein’s empire. Beneath the charm, however, Vince is always one bad bet away from betraying the wrong person. (Chapters 4-10?)
- Harold “Hal” Whitmore – a corrupt city councilman in Lakeport who secretly manipulates the criminal underworld while smiling for the cameras. He controls zoning laws, construction permits, and property deals, making him indispensable to anyone who wants to expand their empire. Hal thrives on bribes and backroom deals, quietly arranging assassinations or sabotage when his interests are threatened. His polished public image hides a ruthless fixer who plays every side, ensuring he always profits no matter who wins. By Chapter 12, Hal’s influence makes him a dangerous political player, capable of tipping the balance between syndicate, cartel, and casino. (Chapters 7-12)
- The Dirty 9s – a ruthless street gang, known for their bright orange colors and violent turf wars. They thrive on drug dealing, extortion, and drive-by intimidation, ruling the blocks with fear. Their rivalry with the Southside Reapers keeps the city streets in constant chaos. Ambitious and reckless, the Dirty 9s are always looking to expand their influence. They embody raw street power, unpredictable and dangerous to anyone who crosses them. (Chapters X)
- The Southside Reapers – a tight-knit gang built on loyalty and family ties, known for their blue colors. They control neighborhoods through protection rackets, community influence, and a strong sense of brotherhood. Unlike the Dirty 9s, they see themselves as protectors of their turf, but they’re just as ruthless when challenged. Their clashes with rival gangs often spill into public violence, making them feared and respected. The Reapers represent the “family-first” mentality of organized street crime. (Chapters X)
- Los Callejeros – a cartel-inspired gang, feared for their brutality and international connections. They deal in large-scale drug trafficking, weapons smuggling, and assassinations. Unlike street gangs, they operate with military precision, making them a serious threat to syndicates and casinos alike. They embody the cartel mentality — profit above all, no mercy for rivals. (Chapters 4-12)
- The Jaded Crew – an Asian gang with Japanese roots, blending street-level operations with syndicate discipline. They run gambling dens, cybercrime rings, and underground clubs, giving them a sleek but dangerous reputation. Their style is sharp, modern, and calculated, making them stand out from chaotic street gangs. They often clash with rivals over respect and territory, but their discipline makes them hard to break. The Jaded Crew represent the fusion of tradition and modern criminal enterprise. (Chapter 6-12)
- The Asphalt Reapers – a biker gang that dominates highways and outskirts of the city. They thrive on smuggling, meth labs, and violent raids, living by their own outlaw code. Their leather-clad members are loyal to the gang above all else, making them unpredictable and dangerous. They often clash with cartels and syndicates when their routes are threatened. The Asphalt Reapers embody chaos on wheels, a constant menace roaring through the city. (Chapters 7-12)
- Casey Parker – Jace’s Friend (Chapters 1-6, 8-12)
- Ms. “Laura” Steiner – Jace’s Teacher (Chapters 1-3, 5)
Minor
- Mr. Steiner – mentioned as part of the family coming to the apartment (his gruffness and critical nature show up later in the dinner scene).
- Mrs. Steiner – talkative, gossipy, filling the air with chatter; she adds to the crowded, noisy atmosphere of the dinner.
- Jessie Steiner – the daughter, often distracted by her phone, later bonded with Jace during the night after dinner and Black Friday.
- Rowan Steiner – the son, arrogant and clashing with his father, but also sharing moments of laughter with Jace.
- Mrs. “Carmen” Norwood – Jace’s Principal (Chapters 1, 5)

- Slug – Minor antagonist.
- Tony – Goldstein’s Assistant.

Lakeport, IS is the central city in the story, modeled after Chicago, IL. It serves as the bustling metropolitan hub where much of the action unfolds, with its towering skyline, diverse neighborhoods, and vibrant cultural life echoing the real-world Chicago.
Other cities are mentioned throughout the book or used as scene locations, each inspired by real Midwestern places but reimagined with fictional twists. Among them is Lake Haven, a picturesque lakeside town based on Lake Geneva, WI. Lake Haven provides a sharp contrast to the urban sprawl of Lakeport, offering a quieter, resort-like atmosphere that becomes an important backdrop for more intimate and reflective moments in the narrative.
The broader setting also includes the fictional state of Wexford, a parody of Wisconsin. Wexford is depicted with rolling farmland, dairy country, and small towns that mirror Wisconsin’s identity, but with exaggerated quirks and satirical touches that highlight the cultural and political flavor of the region.

Together, Lakeport, Lake Haven, and Wexford create a layered world that blends realism with parody, grounding the story in recognizable Midwestern landscapes while giving the author freedom to reshape them for dramatic and thematic purposes.

The Cities Included are:
– Aldercrest, IS (Aurora)
– Maplewood, IS (Naperville)
– Evenstone, IS (Evanston)
– Eastwyn, IS (Elgin)
– Jordan Bay, IS (Joliet)
– Rockwell, IS (Rockford)
– Glenrock, IS (Galena)
– Lake Haven, WX (Lake Geneva)
– Delridge, IS (DeKalb)
– Cedar Falls, IS (Woodstock)
– Angel City, IS (Waukgan)
The Districts and Neighborhoods in Lakeport:
- Downtown Lakeport –
- Trosden South –
- Osaka Square – Lakeport’s Japanese district — a buzzing pocket of neon signs, ramen stalls, karaoke bars, and anime shops tucked into the city’s downtown grid. At night, the streets glow with lanterns and LED billboards, while the smell of takoyaki and grilled yakitori drifts through the air. Crowds spill out of izakayas, pachinko parlors vibe off with flashing lights, and the square itself is anchored by a towering torii gate that marks the entrance. It’s equal parts cultural hub and nightlife hotspot — a place where tradition meets modern chaos, and where secrets can hide in the alleys behind glowing kanji signs.
Lakeport Radio Network is a fictional collection of FM radio stations serving the vibrant and musically diverse region of Lakeport. Each station caters to a distinct genre or theme, offering listeners a wide array of sonic experiences—from classical symphonies to underground punk and global rhythms. The network is a cultural staple in the setting, often referenced in local media and storytelling.
In Chapter 7, titled “Father/Son,” Jace impressively recites every Lakeport radio station from memory during a conversation with Mr. DeLuca—highlighting his deep connection to the local soundscape and his encyclopedic grasp of the region’s radio culture.
