Gio Palmieri is a fictional character from General Hospital, an American soap opera on the ABC network. Portrayed by actor and musician Giovanni Mazza, the character debuted on May 15, 2024.
Introduced as the cousin of Brook Lynn Quartermaine (Amanda Setton) and Lois Cerullo (Rena Sofer), Gio quickly becomes a part of the Quartermaine family. Over time, he forms friendships with Josslyn Jacks (Eden McCoy) and Trina Robinson (Tabyana Ali) while also reconnecting with Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard), who had previously financed his education after in the wake of his mother’s death. Initially a supporting character, Gio’s storyline takes a dramatic turn when it is revealed that he is actually the biological son of Brook Lynn and Sonny’s son, Dante Falconeri (Dominic Zamprogna).
Mazza’s portrayal of Gio Palmieri was well received, though fans and critics expressed frustration over the character’s limited development and the controversial twist regarding his parentage.
Development
Creation and casting
Mazza’s casting was first reported by Deadline Hollywood on May 9, 2024. The role allowed him to showcase his real-life skills as a violinist.[1] Following the announcement, Mazza expressed his gratitude on social media, thanking General Hospital and his agent for the opportunity and writing that he was “honored, grateful, and ecstatic” to join the series.[3] He made his debut as a contract series regular on May 15, 2024.[5]
Casting director Mark Teschner recalled being immediately struck by Mazza’s audition tape, describing him as “a great-looking kid” with “something very soulful” and “compelling” about his presence.[6] A native of Chicago, Mazza had relocated to Los Angeles in March 2024 to pursue acting full-time. In interviews with Soap Opera Digest and on the That’s Awesome! podcast with co-stars Steve Burton and Bradford Anderson, Mazza explained that he had intended to stay in Los Angeles for only two months before returning home. He initially auditioned for a one-day guest role, submitting a self-tape while focusing on another audition for an Amazon pilot.[7][8]
According to Teschner, the casting team was originally searching for a 15-year-old actor for a recurring role but later broadened the age range. Despite being 18 at the time, Mazza’s performance impressed Teschner enough to share it with executive producer Frank Valentini, noting, “I’m well aware he’s too old, but I just want you to see him.”[6] Mazza was subsequently invited to a producer session. On the day of the audition, his car was vandalized, and he arrived flustered, forgetting his lines mid-scene. Valentini allowed him another take, and though Mazza left feeling unsatisfied with his performance, he had prepared extensively for the opportunity, watching multiple episodes of General Hospital to understand the show’s tone and pacing.[8][7]
Although he did not book the original role, Mazza was offered a different part the following day—a newly created contract role written specifically for him.[8] He later described the experience as “surreal,” telling Soap Opera Digest, “It felt like the Twilight Zone. It didn’t feel real.” The casting came as a relief to his mother, who had been concerned about him relocating to Los Angeles on his own. Reflecting on his sudden success, Mazza said, “To have been given this opportunity … I’m just so incredibly grateful.”[7] Teschner later described the experience as “unique,” noting that the production team cast Mazza within his first week in Los Angeles, before any other projects had the chance to discover him.[6]
Characterization
Personality
In 2024, Mazza described Gio as “such a sweet guy,” emphasizing his deep appreciation for the support of his loved ones. “He’s a hard-working kid. He always keeps his head down, but he’s always looking out for ways to grow next,” Mazza explained. He also noted that Gio is “very humble” and does not enjoy being praised.[7]
Critics and commentators have praised Gio’s character. Curtis Harding described him as “brilliantly talented,”[9] while Alina Adams referred to him as a “virtuoso” with “mad violin skills and a charming smile.”[10] Adams later added, “He’s sweet. And cute. And he fiddles nicely.”[11] Ridhima Raina of Sportskeeda called Gio a “charming violinist with a mysterious past.”[12] Meanwhile, Roger Froilan of Soapcentral.com characterized him as “a cheerful and friendly kid.”[13] As the character’s backstory was explored throughout 2025, Bryan Beckly pointed out that Gio maintained his “sincerity and sweetness” while also finding his own voice. Beckley further stated that the “goofiness” Gio possessed in the beginning was replaced with “strong conviction.”[14] Cheryl E. Preston described Gio as a “mild-mannered young man that everyone loved.”[15]
Backstory
Giovanni “Gio” Palmieri was introduced as a member of the Cerullo family.[16] Through his mother, Camila (née Cerullo) Palmieri, he is related to Brook Lynn Quartermaine (Amanda Setton), making them second cousins once removed. Gio’s father, Francis Palmieri, was a U.S. Army veteran who was killed in action.[17] Gio was born in Los Angeles and raised in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, New York, by his mother, a classically trained violinist originally from Italy who performed with the New York Philharmonic. Camila met Francis shortly after relocating to New York, and the two eloped before his deployment to Afghanistan. She discovered she was pregnant soon after he left, but he was killed in combat before learning of the pregnancy. Camila continued performing professionally while raising Gio as a single mother. Camila met Francis shortly after relocating to New York, and the two eloped before his deployment to Afghanistan. She discovered she was pregnant soon after he left, but he was killed in combat before learning of the pregnancy. Camila continued performing professionally while raising Gio as a single mother. After Camila’s death when Gio was twelve, he was taken in by her great-uncle and great-aunt, Carmine (George Russo) and Gloria Cerullo (Ellen Travolta).[18][19][20] Their daughter, Lois Cerullo (Rena Sofer), later contacted family friend Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard), who helped finance Gio’s education and violin training.[21][22] By 2024, Gio had completed his sophomore year at Fordham University.[23]
Introduction (2024)
The character was introduced in 2024, making his first appearance during Brook Lynn Quartermaine’s (Amanda Setton) wedding, where he performs as a violinist.[1] Mazza’s first day on set involved filming the wedding scenes, which featured a large portion of the cast. He shared his initial scenes with Eden McCoy, who portrays Josslyn Jacks, and credited her with introducing him to the rest of the cast. Describing the experience, Mazza said, “It was such a fun experience because all these people never get to be together [as a big group], and I got to meet so many people that I never would have met.” He called the experience “exciting,” explaining that he felt he had joined “a new family” and referred to his first few days as “the greatest three days of my life.” Mazza admitted that he initially recognized his co-stars only by their character names but soon developed friendships, particularly with Kate Mansi, who portrays Kristina Davis, whom he described as a mentor figure who helped him navigate the fast-paced production schedule.[7]
When Mazza’s debut episode aired, he was on set filming, and a crew member encouraged him to watch the broadcast. Nervous about seeing himself on screen, he viewed the episode alongside a co-star later said, “I kind of left my body for a second.”[7]
Gio’s early storyline included interactions with long-time series lead Maurice Benard, who portrays Sonny Corinthos.[22] To ease his nerves, Mazza sought advice from Benard, who encouraged him to maintain “a calm energy” and focus on listening to his scene partners.[24] Mazza also developed a close working relationship with Evan Hofer (Dex Heller), noting that both characters shared a connection through the military: Gio’s father was killed in Afghanistan, where Dex had served.[25] Hofer advised him on adapting to the show’s rapid filming schedule and memorizing dialogue efficiently.[24]
Gio’s introduction followed a long-standing soap opera tradition of introducing younger characters during the summer to attract teenage audiences.[1][3][2] This led to viewer speculation that Gio might become a potential love interest for either Josslyn Jacks or Trina Robinson (Tabyana Ali).[3][2] Within the series, Gio first meets Trina while working at the Metro Court Hotel’s pool. According to Mazza, “Trina is interested in who Gio is and wants to know more about him, just as he wants to know about her.” Mazza praised his collaboration with Ali, saying, “We just clicked as friends and as people,”[7] and shared that the two met prior to filming to rehearse their scenes together. He described their working relationship as natural, commenting that it felt “like I had known her my whole life.”
[26] The characters later form a friendship, and the trio bond while searching for a new apartment.[27]
Music serves as a defining element of Gio’s early storylines. After performing at Brook Lynn’s wedding, Gio earns a scholarship to Port Charles University following his participation in the school’s summer concert series.[28] Mazza expressed enthusiasm about portraying a musician, stating that the role “couldn’t have been a better combo” of his acting and musical abilities.[7] The violin sequences were developed collaboratively between Mazza, the show’s writers, and musical director Paul Glass, with Mazza encouraged to improvise portions of the performances to enhance realism.[26]
Secret Lineage (2024–2025)
As Gio’s story unfolds in 2024, details about his backstory raise more questions than answers.[10] The revelation that Lois reached out to Sonny to fund Gio’s education after the death of his mother, Camila, adds to the intrigue.[12] Though Sonny has a history of generosity,[29] Gio’s connection to him suggests a deeper “significance” to his story.[12]
Gio later wins the respect of Brook Lynn’s grandmother, Tracy Quartermaine (Jane Elliott), when he stands up to her.[30] He also helps Tracy intervene in the desecration of her parents’ graves.[31] Due to his close relationship with Sonny, Gio often finds himself in the middle of conflict, as Tracy is outspoken about her disdain for the alleged mobster. When Sonny offers Gio a trust fund to continue funding his education, Tracy tries to dissuade him from accepting it, even offering the money herself in Sonny’s stead.[30][32] Gio becomes further entangled when Tracy uses her political influence to ensure Sonny loses control of the waterfront piers, leading him to learn more about Sonny’s fraught history with the Quartermaines.[33] “While [Tracy] shows [Gio] Sonny’s flaws, he reminds her of how Sonny has taken care of him his whole life.”[14]
Meanwhile, the storyline is paralleled by hints of a previously undisclosed fling between Brook Lynn and her childhood friend, Dante Falconeri (Dominic Zamprogna). Although it was long established that they were never romantically involved, a 2024 conversation revisits their past, as Brook Lynn cryptically references a previous encounter between them.[34] Commentator Ridhima Raina acknowledged the show’s tendency to “revisit and rewrite its history,” noting that this development could “impact the complex relationships on the show.” As Brook Lynn and her new husband Harrison Chase (Josh Swickard) begin planning for a family of their own, it becomes clear that Brook Lynn is hiding something.[12] The long-standing tension between Brook Lynn and Lulu Spencer (Alexa Havins)—Dante’s ex-wife—also resurfaces. Stacy Feintuch predicted that such a revelation would “set off all kinds of drama” as “[Lulu] and [Brook Lynn] already have a very contentious relationship, and this will only make it worse.”[35][36]
Amanda Setton On The Brook Lynn Baby Bombshell
It touches so many people, so many characters on the canvas. It’s Brook Lynn and Chase; it’s Brook Lynn’s mom [Lois]. It’s Ned, Tracy, Olivia, Sonny, obviously Dante, Lulu, Dante and Lulu’s kid [Rocco] — it just has such a far reach. I just think it’s a brilliant story point to bring out, and makes for a lot of drama.
Throughout much of 2024, Gio remains a supporting character. Michael Fairman TV described him as “simmering in story,”[38] while Mazza explained that writers spent the first “nine months” establishing his relationships. In early 2025, however, the plot gains momentum. In a January interview, Mazza teased that “something very big” was coming for Gio, adding, “Now we are really going to explore who my character is.”[39]
By this point, Brook Lynn and Gio’s closeness is emphasized, creating “sweet scenes” but also deepening the mystery as they live under the same roof. Campbell described their dynamic as “Gio has become Brook Lynn’s young confidante while she has become the college student’s mentor.”[40] Multiple clues point to the truth: like Brook Lynn and her father, Ned Quartermaine (Wally Kurth), Gio is a talented musician, while Lois appears “shifty” whenever Gio’s deceased parents are mentioned.[11]
After Brook Lynn and Chase discover they cannot conceive a child, a distraught Brook Lynn recalls secretly giving birth to Dante’s child as a teenager—an adoption arranged by Lois.[41] On February 6, 2025, Lois confides in attorney Martin Grey (Michael E. Knight) that Gio is Brook Lynn and Dante’s son. The revelation places Gio among General Hospital’s long list of surprise Quartermaine heirs, dramatically shifting his place in the show’s legacy.[37]
Head writers Chris Van Etten and Elizabeth Korte later explained that “Brook Lynn and Dante’s shared youth—all having taken place off-screen—is too rich with possibility to resist.” They added, “The truth about Gio’s heritage would rock the Quartermaines, the Corinthoses, the Cerullos, the Falconeris, and Gio himself.”[42] Even the date and location of Gio’s birth were falsified to conceal his identity. Raised to believe he was born on June 4, 2003 in Los Angeles, Gio was actually born on May 15, 2003, in San Francisco.[43][18][44] Rena Sofer said “Lying to Ned and Olivia and Brook Lynn and Dante is one thing, but lying to [Gio] this boy that Lois helped grow up? That’s a completely different thing.”[45]
Later, the tension culminates when Dante and Lulu’s teenage son, Rocco (Finn Carr), becomes intoxicated at a party. Gio’s misguided attempt to help by taking him home leads to a medical emergency, and Dante lashes out at Gio in anger.[46] Dante accuses him of lying,[47] claiming that Gio has been “babied his whole life” and never held accountable due to Lois’s protection.[48] In the emotionally charged scene, Gio—hurt and confused—remains silent.[49] Now aware of Dante’s true opinion of him,[50] Gio is left devastated.[49] Preston said The dramatic confrontation exposes a “darker side” Gio’s persona. “You could see [Gio] fuming.”Cite error: A <ref> tag is missing the closing </ref> (see the help page). The confrontation raises the emotional stakes, setting the stage for the reveal of Gio’s true identity.[46]
A year after his introduction, Gio takes center stage at the 2025 Nurses’ Ball, performing an original composition titled “Glow,” which Mazza released when he was twelve.[51] On the May 22, 2025 episode, Gio overhears Lois confess that Brook Lynn and Dante are his biological parents. The “emotional high” from his performance “quickly vanished.” As he processes the revelation backstage, Mazza portrays “Gio’s pain and confusion with his anguished stare and quiet tone.”[52] Gio returns to the stage, only to smash his violin in anger as he exposes the truth to the audience.[53]
Mazza later shared that he “connected to that feeling of vulnerability, of the rug being pulled out from under me,” while executive producer Frank Valentini advised him to focus on Gio’s pain rather than anger, a choice that shaped the final cut. The pivotal scenes aired on Mazza’s 20th birthday, which he celebrated by watching the episode with family and friends.[54]
Fallout
In the immediate aftermath, Gio runs off. Dustin Cushman said, “Poor Gio not only got his world rocked about who his biological parents are, but he thinks neither of them wanted him and have been lying to his face his entire life! This won’t be an easy, overnight fix.”[55]
- Cheryl E. Preston said Mazza “was finally given material that let General Hospital viewers see the range of talents.”[15]

Relationship with Emma Drake
Storylines
Gio arrives in Port Charles as a guest at his cousin Brook Lynn Quartermaine‘s (Amanda Setton) wedding when she marries Detective Harrison Chase (Josh Swickard). Brook Lynn’s mother, Lois Cerullo (Rena Sofer) booked Gio to perform the violin at the ceremony. He reunites with family friend Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) and thanks him for paying for his lessons. Gio commiserates with Chase’s co-worker, Officer Dex Heller (Evan Hofer) about his time in Afghanistan as Gio’s father died in combat before he was born. Lois invites Gio to stay at the Quartermaine mansion and Gio lands a summer job as a pool attended at the Metro Court Hotel, thanks to Brook Lynn’s stepmother, Olivia Falconeri (Lisa LoCicero). Gio befriends Josslyn Jacks (Eden McCoy) and Trina Robinson (Tabyana Ali) when he reveals that he is playing the Summer stage concerts in exchange for a scholarship to Port Charles University. Trina invites Gio to audition to play at the art gallery where she works as her boss, Ava Jerome (Maura West) needs someone to play the next opening. Gio makes an impression and wins the gig. Gio helps Trina and Josslyn move into their new apartment, above the Quartermaine’s garage.
Gio wins first chair in the PCU orchestra and he is embarrassed when Brook Lynn brags about to Josslyn. Brook Lynn reveals that Gio’s mother, Camila Palmieri
Too humble, Gio is embarrassed when Brook Lynn brags to Josslyn and her mother, Carly Spencer (Laura Wright) about him being selected as first chair when he transfers to PCU. Brook Lynn explains that Gio’s mother died when he was 10 and played violin for the New York Philharmonic. Gio later reassures Sonny that while he is grateful for his support over the years, he was no longer on his own, thanks to the Quartermaines and his scholarship. Gio later confides in Josslyn that he did not want to take advantage of Sonny’s generosity.[70] Trina confides in Gio about love she shared with her late boyfriend, and Gio confides in Trina about growing up with his mom, and how she was his first violin teacher.[71] On his July 4th, Gio fills Trina & Josslyn in on how his mom immigrated to the United States from Italy and how he grew up spending the day at huge block parties organized by the Cerullo and Falconeri families.[72] Later, Lois offers Gio the chance to play violin on Broadway. However, Gio turns it down as his scholarship was dependent on his participation in the summer concerts. Meanwhile, Lois warns her Gio about how tough her former mother-in-law, Brook Lynn’s grandmother, Tracy Quartermaine (Jane Elliot). Despite the warnings, Gio penetrates Tracy’s hard exterior when he makes joke about her brother late brother Alan (Stuart Damon) gifting the mansion to his wife, Monica (Leslie Charleson). After she quizzes him about his favorite parts of New York City, Tracy agrees to give him a tour of her late mother’s Lila‘s (Anna Lee) gardens.[73] Gio and Josslyn pull the pregnant Kristina Davis (Kate Mansi) from the pull after she falls through the window in Ava’s hotel room. As Kristina is rushed to the hospital, Gio contacts her father, Sonny.[74] Later, Gio worries that Ava’s involvement in Kristina’s accident will turn people away from the gallery but Lois and Brook Lynn reassure him otherwise. He also worries if Sonny will be upset that he still works for Ava.[75]
Reception
Casting and introduction
Michelle Parkerton from Soaps In Depth said “There’s a new heartthrob heading to General Hospital just in time for summer.” Parkerto expressed hope that “Mazza will stick around town long after the rest of the Cerullos return to Brooklyn!”[76] Rachel Dillin of Soap Hub said Mazza’s casting, “This young man is a double threat as an actor and a talented violinist.”[77] Soaps In Depth’s Chris Eades described Gio onscreen arrival as a “relatively quiet introduction.”[78] Soniya of Sportskeeda said Mazza’s musical performance during the wedding scenes was a real “treat” for the audience.[79] Soapcentral.com’s Liz Masters loved Mazza’s addition as Gio and looked forward to seeing him play the violin more. “I like his energy too” she added.[80]
Roger Froilan said “Mazza has not only won fans over as Gio Palmieri, but he has also amazed them with his extraordinary talent playing the violin.”[82] Poushali Guharauth said that Gio’s “entry was entry into the storyline was exciting” and “well received by the audience.” However, by November 2024, the lack of development had viewrers questioning the reason for his presence. “I like Gio, he just needs a good storyline” one viewer stated.[83] In December 2024, Stacy Feintuch said, “Gio has been on General Hospital since May hasn’t had much purpose.”[36] Soap Hub listed Mazza as one its list of the “4 Best Daytime Newcomers” in 2024.[84]
Amanda Setton praised Mazza for his portrayal. “Gio is such a doll. I absolutely love working with him. He is such a hard worker and he’s so eager to be of service as an actor in all of his scenes. And he’s just delicious! He’s so fun and he’s having a great time on the show and I’m having a great time with him.”[86]
Build up
Secret lineage
Alina Adams said Sonny’s interest in Gio “seems a bit random.”[10] However, Sportskeeda credited Gio’s relationships with Sonny, Trina and the Quartermaines, “added depth to his character, leaving fans eager to learn more” and made the story “his parentage a fascinating mystery.”[12]
Charlie Mason referred to the revelation about Gio as a “truth bomb.”[87]
Charlie Mason countered stating the rewrite was unnecessary and was a lot to expect viewers to accept considering other recent story retcons.[95]
Carolyn Hinsey described the scenes in which Lois confessed that Gio was her grandson as “anticlimactic.” She explained that while the setup “is as soapy as it gets,” she complained that “telegraphing Gio’s identity so many months before the ‘reveal’ robbed this tale of the dramatic punch it could have packed.[98]
- Multiple publications named Mazza as Performer of the Week for his portrayal of Gio during the May 22, 2025 episode. Hope Campbell said Mazza’s performance “blew us all away” and solidified him as the “next big soap star.” Whilw Mazza had played the violin on the show before, “what he did on the Nurses’ Ball stage was both magnificent and magical.” Campbell contiued with Mazza’s portrayal of Gio’s explosive reveal about his parentage. “By this point, our hearts were breaking for Gio and our jaws were further on the floor. That’s a testament to Mazza’s stunning performance that left us just wanting more.”[52]
- Mara Levinsky said the “powerhouse performance” made Mazza a star.[54]
- “gut-wrenching” moment[101][55]
- Mazza’s rendition of “Glow” was the highlight of performances; The execution of Gio exposing his own heritage = “brilliant.”; “Add this performance to the many Daytime Emmy-worthy ones that have come out of this storyline!” Lack of immediately follow up with Gio, Brook Lynn & Lois added to the “realism”, while others digested the news “kept the tension going.”[55]
