In October 2008, the Austrian business magazine “ trend” reported her unusual relationship with the pharmaceutical industry, suggesting a detrimental side-effect for the general public.

In her years as vice director at the head of the social insurances, she had repeatedly arranged meetings of doctors and senior pharmaceutical managers in her private home. The invitations were attractively packed, and sent out by “the No. 1” among the pharmaceutical lobbyists of Austria who was also present.

During her very period, an extraordinary increase in the expenses for drugs for drugs had happened. For drugs, public costs rose within 4 years by 21% (2003 to 2007, equaling an additional 400 million euros), whereas annaul inflation had been flat at 2%. Particularly a steep increase was in 2006 plus 2007 (15% alone in those two years). In December 2007 the Austrian parliament ruled in, and legislated a cost ceiling of a maximum of 2% above inflation for the comming years. In 2009 Hartinger´s contract at the helm of the social insurances was not prolonged.[1]
