Prodigal Son is a thriller novel written by Gregg Hurwitz. It is the sixth book in Orphan X series.

Plot

Evan Smoak gets a call from a woman who says she is his mother. She needs help. The woman is named Veronica. She tells Evan a man is in danger at a plant. Evan does not know if he can trust her. He has not seen her since he was a boy. He goes to the plant and finds a man named Andrew. Men are trying to kill him.

Evan saves Andrew from a team of killers. They use high tech tools to hunt. Joey looks into Veronica. She finds out the woman has a past with the program. A man named Luke is the one sending the hits. He is a bad man with much power.

Evan meets Veronica in a park. He looks for a sign that she is truly his kin. She tells him about a secret project. It uses tiny drones to kill from the air. Evan takes Andrew to a new spot. The man is a tech head who built the drones. Luke wants the drones to sell to the highest bid. He will kill to get them.

Evan buys gear to fight the small birds. He needs a way to jam the signal. Veronica tells Evan she left him to keep him safe. He does not know if he can forgive. A team finds Evan at a store. He uses a cart to block their path and runs. He drives a fast car to the hills. He must stop the lab before the drones fly.

Joey stays on the line to help. She shuts down the lights in the lab. Evan slips in through a vent. He moves in the dark like he always does. He finds a room full of the tiny birds. They are ready to hunt and kill. Luke talks over the loud speaker. He says Evan cannot win this fight.

Evan sets a jammer on the floor. The drones fall like rain from the sky. A guard finds Evan near the desk. They fight with fists in the dim light. Evan wins and finds the drive. It has the names of the men who bought the birds. He finds Veronica in a cell. Luke was holding her there to bait Evan. They run to the exit fast. The lab is set to blow up in five minutes.

Evan finds Luke in the hall. The man has a gun and a cold heart. They trade shots in the heat. Evan hits Luke in the arm and the leg. Luke falls and the fire takes him. Evan and Veronica get out just in time. They drive away as the lab turns to ash. The drones are gone for good now.
