Dutch racing driver (born 1990)

Chris van den Berg (Dutch pronunciation: [kris vɑn dən ˈbɛrx]; (born 17 September 1990) is a Dutch racing driver, who competes in Formula One for Williams Racing. He is the son of former Mclaren (1985-1987) test driver Sijmen van den Berg and World Rally Championship driver Daniel van den Berg.

In January of 2009 it would be announced that van den Berg would make his GP2 series debut with Telmex Arden International, He would compete with them for the first eight rounds before moving to Piquet GP for the final two rounds.
After the 2009 Formula One Italian Grand Prix it was announced that van den Berg would be joining Scuderia Ferrari for 2010 as Test Driver.

Van den Berg would participate in nine Free Practice sessions in 2010, five with Ferrari and four with Marussia. At the 2010 Japanese Grand Prix it would be announced that van den Berg would be replacing Lucas di Grassi at Marussia for his rookie season.

Partnering up with veteran Timo Glock for 2011, van den Berg would best him 12-7 in Qualifying and 14-1 in races. Scoring the only points (18) for Marussia in its history putting the team in ninth at the end of the season, the highest WCC position in the teams history.

The 2012 season would start off great for van den Berg achieving 4 podiums in his first starts of which two were wins, one coming from Pole at the Chinese Grand Prix.

At the German Grand Prix in 2012, NASCAR racer and former Williams race winner Juan Pablo Montoya would approach van den Berg if he had any interest in racing the Daytona 500 in 2013 for Chip Ganassi. Williams however declined this offer fearing their driver would get injured.

GP2 Series career (2009-2010)

2009: First GP2 season

Van den Bergs rookie season in GP2 would start off tough with small points and questions from the team management about his seat. Heading into the German Round with four points in the first eighth races, the team would decide to focus on van den Bergs setup compared to Edoardo Mortara. It would prove that van den Berg had pace if given the right car as the Dutchman would score fourth in both the feature race and sprint aswell as posting the fastest lap in the latter race. This change would set up the rest of the season perfectly for the rookie seeing him sweep both races in Hungary and finishing top six in the next four races. On thursday before the Italian Round it would be announced that van den Berg would replace Alberto Valerio for the last 2 rounds as preparation for a full season with the team in 2010. Van den Berg would finish three of the four races, all three in the top five.
He would finish the season with five podiums, of which three were wins and finishing the season in fourth with 62 points.

2010: Season long domination

Expectations would be high for van den Berg after pre-season testing. He would be the only driver of previous seasons top five to race a full season in 2010. Van den Berg would not disappoint finishing on the podium in the first ten races, winning seven races, six of which were consecutive. The first hurdle would come at the Hockenheim Round where van den Berg would qualify ninth seeing him start on the back foot for the feature race eventually finishing in fifth, with the sprint being less fruitful. He would start second, however losing 3 spots at the start. He would climb back through the field back to second eventually trying to make a move for the win on Marcus Ericsson overshooting into the Swede eliminating him for the race, van den Berg would get a ten second penalty dropping him to seventh. He however still had a massive gap to his teammate, Pastor Maldonado, in second.
Entering Spa, van den Berg could sow up the title after the sprint race if teammate Maldonado did not score more than 18 points. However after a sixth place qualifying the feature race would be won by van den Berg, this would see him win the title with five races left in the season. In the sprint van den Berg would be fighting fellow Dutchman, Giedo van der Garde for the win. With 6 laps remaining van den Berg would lock up entering bus stop, cutting the final corner in the process which allowed him to pass van der Garde and win the sprint. The champion however would receive a 10 second time penalty for leaving the track and gaining an advantage dropping him to eleventh. Van den Berg would win the last two remaining feature races at Monza and Yas Marina ending the season with a second place in the Yas Marina sprint.

Marussia (2011)

After being a test driver for them in the 2010 season, Ferrari would get van den Berg a seat at backmarker team Marussia. With them he would manage to score points on debut in the form of a ninth place finish, the first points ever in the history of the team. He would continue to score points throughout the season with a best finish of seventh at the Singapore Grand Prix.
At the Canadian Grand Prix talks would start between van den Berg and Williams with possibilities of a seat for 2012 and beyond.
However, Ferrari would catch word of this and at the Italian Grand Prix would announce that they were gonna stop their cooperation with the Dutchman with immediate effect. This would not phase van den Berg as he would score points in four of the last six races of the season ending it in P15 with 18 points, the most in the teams history.
At the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix Williams announced that van den Berg would be joining them for the 2012 season alongside Venezuelan Pastor Maldonado.

Williams (2012-2013)

2012: First wins and maiden title

Having signed a one year contract with Williams, van den Berg would shine on debut starting in sixth and finishing on the podium in third. Williams first podium since the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix. He would continue his strong form with another podium in Malaysia followed by his first pole and victory at the Chinese Grand Prix. By the time of the Canadian Grand Prix van den Berg had made himself a Championship Favorite.
At the German Grand Prix, Mercedes would approach the Dutchman for a seat in 2013. Van den Berg would decline this saying he feels he can go further with Williams.
He would be leading by 32 points heading into the summer break, eventually bumping that up to 59 after winning back to back races at the Singapore Grand Prix and Italian Grand Prix.
After the Korean Grand Prix it was announced that van den Berg had signed a multi year contract keeping him until 2014.
Van den Berg would have a back and forth with Mark Webber between who scored the most points, however van den Berg would be the championship leader each race. A podium finish at the Indian Grand Prix would allow him to seal the deal in Abu Dhabi, a rainy qualifying would throw dirt in van den Bergs face as he would qualify only 11th with Webber in 3rd. With van den Berg finishing in 8th place the title would go to the inaugural United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas. A rainy qualifying would see him starting in P20 with Webber in P8. At the start van den Berg would climb up through the field with Webber falling down. The Williams had a lot of pace as van den Berg would climb up to second before pitstops eventually passing race leader Jenson Button for the lead.
“When I saw that Jenson got held up in his pit stop I knew that I had another shot at the win.” the Dutchman stated “Andy (van den Bergs race engineer) urged me to take it easy at a second place finish was enough for the title. However I didn’t think it was enough, I wanted that victory and so heading into the hairpin I would make my move, take the lead and not look back”
Van den Berg would end up winning the race starting 19th and win the Drivers Championship. The first Dutch Formula One Champion and the first for Williams since 1997.
Van den Berg would end the season with a fourth place finish at the Brazilian Grand Prix after running out of fuel on the backstraight. He would go 12-3 in race results and 11-9 in qualifying results against his teammate Pastor Maldonado.

2013: Title defense

Defending Champion, Chris van den Berg would partner up again with Pastor Maldonado for the 2013 season.
The season would have a rough start with van den Berg qualifying in 18th at the Australian Grand Prix eventually finishing 7th in the race. He would go on to score points in the Malaysian and the Bahrain Grand Prix but fail to finish in the Chinese and Spanish Grand Prix. A light in the dark would come at Monaco as the Dutchman would reach Q3 for the first time that year qualifying sixth which he would convert into his first victory of the year and second consecutive Monaco Grand Prix victory. He would follow this up with his best qualifying spot of the year with third in Canada going on to win the race getting two wins in a row.
After finishing eight in the British Grand Prix, van den Berg would manage to finish third two races in a row. In the Hungarian Grand Prix he would qualify in third, his best starting position of the season. That same race only eight cars would manage to finish the race. At the Belgian Grand Prix van den Berg would qualify in a dissapointing 13th position, however after La Source he would manage to climb up to sixth, the top five would head onto Kemmel straight bunched up allowing the Dutchman to catch up with a mega slipstream passing all five cars into Les Combes taking the lead and winning his 50th Formula One start. This would put him only eight points behind Championship leader Lewis Hamilton, a retirement in Monza would see this gap jump up to 22 points.
