This page is for discussion about the village pump only. You may want one of the village pump subpages above, or one of the links on the village pump main page. Irrelevant discussions will be moved or removed.

What is the etymology of using “village pump” as a general discussion place on Wikipedia? I assume it’s because in the past, a whole community of people lined up to use a physical village pump, and used that time to talk to each other. Is this correct? 184.146.170.127 (talk) 19:59, 11 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

That’s correct. On Commons – the repository of media files used by Wikipedia – the Village pump page is decorated with photos of literal village pumps. —andrybak (talk) 21:07, 11 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

A more modern (and perhaps more understandable) metaphor could be “watercooler”, but I guess this works too. 🙂 Ravilov (talk) 14:45, 7 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, my username was سنوببي, I lost control one the account yesterday and I report it to ary.wiki authority, and then my account and IP address were blocked, but I regained control on the account today, however, I can’t wrote a request for unblocking me, since my ip is blocked. any solution please? I love writing with my mother tongue. And honestly it’s a tough pill to swallow for me. 105.158.208.132 (talk) 23:05, 31 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Upon learning about this page, I was very confused for a while as to what Village Pump is (in part because of the odd name). Seemingly, I am not alone, considering the above talk topic “What is this?”.

Hence, I propose adding a brief explanation to the top of Village Pump to explicitly convey what it is and its purpose. For example, the bo.wikipedia.org version has this (This is how I found out what it is):

“Welcome to the Village Pump. This set of pages is used to discuss the technical issues, policies, and operations of Wikipedia, and is divided into five village pump sections.
This page is not for discussions. Please use the table below to find the most appropriate section to post in, or post in the miscellaneous section.” Bailey’s Wiki Editing Account (talk) 08:32, 17 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The Wikipedia:Village pump (all) page should just join together the six VP pages into one big page. It does include four of them, but fails to include Wikipedia:Village pump (idea lab) and Wikipedia:Village pump (WMF). It just displays a link to them. I have checked the code in VP (all) and it seems to correctly transclude all six VP pages in exactly the same way. I have also checked each of the six VP pages and all seem to have the same valid noinclude tags. Any idea what is going wrong? — GhostInTheMachine talk to me 09:32, 12 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Just been testing stuff … The joined version is simply going to be too large and so “some” templates are not expanded. It is seemingly random that it leaves out #4 and #5 of 6 — GhostInTheMachine talk to me 09:36, 12 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Is there a way Wikipedia can make watchlists for specific articles like federal courts or baseball teams? Jp33442 (talk) 23:52, 14 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Jp33442, this page is for discussion about the village pump only. This sounds like a question for the Wikipedia:Help desk. —andrybak (talk) 23:13, 19 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

andrybak don’t worry about it now Jp33442 (talk) 23:41, 19 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

You are invited to join the discussion at Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals) § Change the Village Pump’s colour.. Sdkbtalk 21:26, 5 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

There’s an extraneous period at the end of the section title in this invitation. For the record, the discussion was archived to Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals)/Archive 222#Change the Village Pump’s colour. —andrybak (talk) 18:34, 20 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. The section initially had the period but it was later removed. Courtesy pinging @FaviFake — when creating threads in the future, it’s best not to end them with periods to avoid complexities like this. Cheers, Sdkbtalk 20:05, 20 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Sdkb Thanks. I know, and I’ve since renamed it while keeping the old anchor. FaviFake (talk) 15:35, 21 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
