Simpson Red Hawks coaches
[edit]
- Rename category Category:Simpson Red Hawks baseball coaches to Category:Simpson Red Hawks coaches while also merging the articles to Category:College baseball coaches in California
- Merge Category:Simpson Red Hawks football coaches to Category:College football coaches in California and Category:Simpson Red Hawks coaches (to be formed by renaming and merging)
- Merge Category:Simpson Red Hawks women’s soccer coaches to Category:Simpson Red Hawks coaches (to be formed by renaming/merging) and Category:College women’s soccer coaches in California
- Nominator’s rational Category:Simpson University only has 5 articles in the whole tree. The article on the university, plus 2 articles on baseball coaches, 1 on a football coach, and 1 on a eomen’s soccer coach. I think we should create a new Category Category:Simpson Red Hawks coaches, move all 4 articles there and then upmerge them to the college coaches in California for their various sports. This would make navigation between articles a lot easier. Right now you have to go through 2 or 3 lawyers of categories to get from the football coach or the women’s soccer coach to the other related articles. Since we have a rule that encourages having Biographical articles seperate I think we should still have the Simpson Red Hawks coaches Category to group them. However since all we have else is the Simpson University article we may just want to delete the parent category and link to the University article in the heading for the coaches Category, but I am not sure either way. The 5 categories holding just 4 articles are excessive though.John Pack Lambert (talk) 21:46, 23 November 2025 (UTC)
- Shouldn’t it become Category:Simpson Red Hawks sports coaches, with “sports”? Marcocapelle (talk) 06:55, 24 November 2025 (UTC)
- Support per nom. These are too narrow to aid navigation, at least with the current coverage in the article space. – RevelationDirect (talk) 22:56, 26 November 2025 (UTC)
- Keep as a parallel category in a well-established class of categories. When category deletion degrades parallelism, it makes navigation more difficult, not easier. Jweiss11 (talk) 03:16, 4 December 2025 (UTC)
- In 2 of the broader Geography coaches categories we already have other articles directly there. This small of categories is not useful. We replaced Small cat guidelines with narrow cat guidelines in part because keeping lots of overly small categories just because there are a lot of them is not wise and does not help navigation. The “well established class of categories” argument is no longer an acceptable argument for keeping particular overly-small categories.John Pack Lambert (talk) 12:15, 4 December 2025 (UTC)
- Keep, per Jweiss. BeanieFan11 (talk) 00:46, 12 December 2025 (UTC)
- Merge Category:Contra Costa Comets football coaches to Category:College football coaches in California and Category:Contra Costa Comets football [added 12-4-2025 Category:Junior college football coaches in the United States)
- Merge Category:Santa Barbara Marines football coaches to Category:College football coaches in California and Category:Santa Barbara Marines football (added 12-4-2025 Category:American military sports coaches)
- Nominators rationale These 1 article categories hinder navigation. Merging to the applicable parent categories will make navigation easier.John Pack Lambert (talk) 21:10, 23 November 2025 (UTC)
- Merge per nom, this is not helpful for navigation. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:57, 24 November 2025 (UTC)

- Keep a parallel categories in a well-established class of categories. When category deletion degrades parallelism, it makes navigation more difficult, not easier. If these categories are to be unmerged, the nomination is missing critical cats: Category:Junior college football coaches in the United States for Contra Costa and Category:American military sports coaches for Santa Barbara. Jweiss11 (talk) 03:21, 4 December 2025 (UTC)
- Comment This small of categories is not useful.
- I reject your argument. But what’s more important is that you should at least alter your nomination per the missing critical categories I identified. Jweiss11 (talk) 17:28, 4 December 2025 (UTC)
- Comment I added the missing targets mentioned above. Category:Junior college football coaches in the United States has 32 direct articles. Category:American military sports coaches has 7 direct articles. So there is even less of a reason to need to diffuse along those lines. 1 article categories are not helping with navigation at all.John Pack Lambert (talk) 19:39, 4 December 2025 (UTC)

- Nominator’s rationale These 2 categories only have 1 article in total. This set up clearly does not conform to the last rung rule which is that we should not diffuse a category by gender (it applies to some other traits as well) if we do not diffuse it in any other way. There are few good reasons to have a 1 article Category, and even fewer to diffuse such a category. I think here we would be best off upmerging to the parent categories. I see no way these 1 article categories are helping navigation.John Pack Lambert (talk) 19:31, 23 November 2025 (UTC)

- I added two more articles to Category:Surfaces of constant negative curvature. Maybe Category:Surfaces of revolution of constant negative curvature could be merged into that category? —Kri (talk) 09:27, 13 November 2025 (UTC)
- Merge all, there are still only 4 articles in 3 categories, this is not helpful for navigation. Marcocapelle (talk) 11:52, 13 November 2025 (UTC)
- What about merging them into Category:Surfaces of constant curvature? That way, there is only 1 category, and 5 articles (I added the article Sphere). I don’t think navigation is the only purpose of categories; they are help you find other articles that are in some sense similar to the one you are currently reading (which this category achieves). —Kri (talk) 21:43, 15 November 2025 (UTC)
- Merge per nom. — Just N. (talk) 13:01, 13 November 2025 (UTC)
- Merge to Category:Surfaces of constant curvature (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs). Hyperbolic geometry doesn’t necessarily have constant curvature, so Category:Hyperbolic geometry is less precise, and Category:Surfaces of constant curvature no longer only contains articles that are about shapes with hyperbolic geometry (the article Sphere isn’t). The categories now in total contain 5 articles, which I think is enough to justify keeping one of the categories. —Kri (talk) 22:02, 15 November 2025 (UTC)

- Nominator’s rationale: It annoys me that Category:Crime in Jerusalem has both Category:Crime in Jerusalem and Category:Crime in the West Bank as parent categories even though the category isn’t only for crimes committed by people with one foot on each side of the border. This split would be defining[1] and objective, so I hope that the only things debated (if anything) will be whether the split should be two-way or three-way and what the names of the new categories should be. Care to differ or discuss with me? The Nth User 09:30, 23 November 2025 (UTC)
- Comment Better to check if upon splitting the categories wouldn’t be WP:NARROW. For example, Category:Terrorist incidents in Jerusalem in the 2020s contains just seven articles and my gut feeling is that after splitting into two they would contain very few articles. Brandmeister talk 12:32, 23 November 2025 (UTC)
- We can create fewer categories if you think that that would be better. I prioritized thoroughness because the category tree seems to be already using that guideline (e.g., Category:Terrorist incidents in Jerusalem in the 1960s only has one member, but there is also a category for each subsequent decade, and it is part of diffusing Category:Terrorist incidents in Jerusalem entirely into subcategories), and I wanted to respect that. However, I also see your argument. Care to differ or discuss with me? The Nth User 20:23, 23 November 2025 (UTC)
- Comment Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2025_November_25#Mass_murder also affects certain categories in this nomination. –LaundryPizza03 (dc̄) 07:16, 26 November 2025 (UTC)
- Oppose. There is a longstanding consensus not to split content in categories for East and West Jerusalem. (2007, 2019, 2020 etc.) Among the issues that would come with such a split are 1°) the ethnic POV-fork, as content would be placed in “Jerusalem” or “East Jerusalem” no because of the geographic area but because they are Arab or Jewish and 2°) recentism, as placing pre-1948 content in a West or East Jerusalem category makes little sense. As a result, due to the disputed status of Jerusalem, which is claimed in part of whole by both Israel and the Palestinians, the strict respect of NPOV (a founding pillar of Wikipedia) mandates that Jerusalem categories are placed in both Israel and Palestine parent categories. This is not an issue (no more than placing Crimea categories in both Russia and Ukraine parents). Place Clichy (talk) 07:50, 5 December 2025 (UTC)

Jordan’s desert castles
[edit]
- Nominator’s rationale: The caption in the image of Desert castles#Historical background uses the phrase “desert castles in Jordan,” which also feels more professional than the current name. Merging to Category:Castles in Jordan is an alternative, but Desert castles seems to indicate that this is a well-defined category and not just based on some arbitrary amount of rainfall that the land around the castle must receive per year. However, this category definitely should have parent categories, and more desert castle pages are listed in Desert castles#Jordan than are in this category, so it looks like there will be work to do (which I am willing to perform) if this category ends up being kept. Category:Hawaii artists
[edit]
- Nominator’s rationale: I think we need to merge these OR make it much clearer what the distinction is SMasonGarrison 01:37, 23 November 2025 (UTC)
- Purge and Merge. The lists of painters, sculptors and printmakers who depicted Hawai’i and its people should not be merged to Artists from Hawaii. A portion of them either did these depictions without ever going to Hawaii or with very short visits to Hawaii. The broad heading of this category would justify applying it to any animator of the 2002 film “Lilo and Stitch” at least the huge part of that film that is set in Hawaii. Whether or not said person ever set foot in Hawaii. The lists existing show there is a phenomenon in art of “depicting Hawaii and its people”, and many who have done so were not “from Hawaii” by any reasonable definition. People from Hawaii need to bd long term residents, not just artists who come for a few months to create their art, and dome of the people who have depicted Hawaii never went there at all. However I do not think that this is a defining enough concept to justify a category. My Lilo and Stitch example would include animators who had a broad array of works in lots of places, and some set of artists who have done many works depicting Hawaii and Hawaiians you will find that their topic is more broadly Pacific Islands and Pacific islanders. This is a topic that is better covered by a list than a category. Any people here who actually were from Hawaii should be merged there, but artists who briefly cane to Hawaii to create workers should not be moved to that category just because those works defined them, only if their residence reached to a truly defining part of their life.John Pack Lambert (talk) 02:05, 23 November 2025 (UTC)
- The first person in Hawaii artists is Auguste Borget who began exhibiting in Paris in 1836. He was French. In 1838 he stopped “briefly” in Hawaii after traveling though the Americas and then went on to travel though Malaya and India in 1839. The lead says he was known for his drawings and prints of “exotic places” [is that term actually NPOV compliant] and then says “in particular China”. The article does not clearly say he represented Hawaii in his art at all. What it dies say is a museum in Hawaii holds dome of his work. We do not want to categorize artists by where the museums that hold their work are, and for artists thst drew lots of places we do not want to categorize every place they drew. John Pack Lambert (talk) 02:20, 23 November 2025 (UTC)
- Clearly a case of WP:OCASSOC. Can’t we just delete the category? All artists from Hawaii are presumably already in Category:Artists from Hawaii. Marcocapelle (talk) 08:53, 23 November 2025 (UTC)
-
- I am opposed. The early painters of Hawaiian people and landscapes were artists on European ships, who by no stretch of the imagination could be considered to be “from Hawaii”.–~2025-38015-67 (talk) 22:00, 2 December 2025 (UTC)
- Those articles should be purged. Marcocapelle (talk) 11:31, 3 December 2025 (UTC)
- Which is why I say purge and merge. A person on a passing ship who painted the people in Hawaii, and then Tonga, and then Australia, and then China, and then India, and then the Cape Colony, and then the Gold Coast, and then returned to England, is not defined by any of these locations he was painting people in, and so we do not need this category for such people.John Pack Lambert (talk) 19:42, 4 December 2025 (UTC)
