They train on large amounts of sources, blend the text into “tokens” of a few characters in length, and reassemble into words, sentences and paragraphs based on statistical most likely outcome what token comes next. This can produce amazing results, it can also be extremely difficult to source where an assertion came from. LLMs are notorious for hallucinating citations or giving the wrong citation.

Essay on editing Wikipedia

Grokipedia as a source

Usage of Grokipedia as a source is generally inappropriate, for breaching three of Wikipedia’s standards:

  • The guideline WP:RSML: Content from LLM tools such as ChatGPT and other AI chatbots is generally unreliable.
  • The policies WP:CIRCULAR and WP:COPYLINK: Do not use websites mirroring Wikipedia content or publications relying on material from Wikipedia as sources and If you know or reasonably suspect that an external Web site is carrying a work in violation of copyright, do not link to that copy of the work
    • Mirroring (WP:MIRROR): Although Grokipedia is not technically speaking a mirror of Wikipedia, some Grokipedia articles are word-for-word copies of Wikipedia articles, or include large sections that are word-for-word copies. In such cases Grokipedia will usually include a CC-BY-SA license at the bottom of the page. Failure to include the license is a copyright violation.
    • Derivative: Grokipedia sometimes derives Wikipedia articles ie. it is mostly based on the Wikipedia article with changes in prose. It is recognizable as mostly derivative of the original Wikipedia article. This also require a CC-BY-SA license. Failure to include the license is a copyright violation.
    • Transformation: Grokipedia sometimes transforms Wikipedia articles ie. the text has been so heavily modified it is no longer a derivative. Transformation is legal and not a copyright violation.

Comparing with Wikipedia

It is not possible to make a 1:1 comparison between the two services because Grokipedia does not have the same policies, procedures and philosophy as Wikipedia (WP:CONPOL).

This includes:

  • WP:NPOV – Grokipedia heavily slants towards the agenda of the richest person in the world: personally, politically, economically, philosophically. According to The Atlantic: Musk has repeatedly stated that he wants his AI model to be anti-“woke,” unbiased by “legacy media,” uncensored, and able to freely produce “unhinged NSFW” content. [1]
  • WP:NOR (Original Research) – LLMs engage in substantial Original Research. If there are contradictory sources, or unknown information, LLMs will revert to the mean inferring (guessing) a most likely outcome.
  • WP:V (Verifiability) – LLMs have a hard time connecting facts with sources.
  • WP:RS (Reliable Sources) – Grokipedia relies significantly on low quality web-based sources because they are cheap and easy to access, such as social media.

Principles that Grokipedia does not follow:

  • Transparency – Grokipedia has no public diffs
  • Anyone can edit – Grokipedia employees are privately hired gatekeepers
  • Open knowledge – Grokipedia content is full-copyright for-profit locked from reuse
