[[Category:Wikipedia meetups in January 2026]]

- Date: Sunday 4 January 2026
- Time: midday to 2pm
- Location: Virtual Meeting at this link https://meet.jit.si/WikiAotearoa
IMPORTANT: The first person joining the meeting needs to sign in as the “Moderator” using a Google, Facebook, or GitHub account; other attendees can then join without any authentication – see the jitsi blog for more information.
NOTE: This video conferencing software link will ask permission to use your computer camera and microphone. You will need to agree to get full functionality. Google Chrome or Chromium is recommended for the best experience (not all aspects work correctly with other browsers). The Jitsi web-based video conferencing platform is 100% open source and fully encrypted. No account is needed and it’s free. - Cost: Free
All attendees are expected to understand and abide by the Universal Code of Conduct.
This video conferencing meetup is a replacement for an in-person meetup. While attending and remaining anonymous is supported by the group, lurking is not supported and will be actively discouraged. All attendees are expected to use their User name as an identifier on the video conference call and to introduce themselves and their interest in joining the call on the chat channel of the call as a minimum. Participation using video and / or voice in addition to Chat is encouraged but not required.
Some members of the group have been the target of cyber bullying in the past and these measures are intended to support creating a safe space for collaboration.
If a new attendee joins the group with video and voice disabled, they will be encouraged to participate by the facilitator, using this script:
Welcome new attendee. This group respects your right to remain anonymous. This group has a policy of discouraging lurking as it makes some of us uncomfortable. If you are happy to introduce yourself over voice, please let us know what you’ve been working on and if you need help with any editing issues.
- If you’re not comfortable updating the group by voice, then that’s okay. You have the option of introducing yourself and adding your user page link into the chat feature. The chat is deleted once the video conference finishes.
- If you want to remain completely anonymous and not chat, then this meetup is not for you. We make comprehensive and extensive notes of the meetup that will be included in the meetup page afterwards. That’s the best way to catch up with what this meetup has been doing if you don’t want to contribute during the video call.
- If you’re not sure how to use the chat feature you can access it by clicking on the icon that looks like a speech bubble in the bottom left corner.
If, after an appropriate length of time, the new attendee does not participate by video, voice, or chat, the facilitator of the group will remove the attendee from the video call.
If the new attendee persists in logging in, the group will discuss abandoning the meet up.
The Jitsi video conferencing platform has a chat feature. This is used to share URLs and other commentary while the discussions are occurring. The facilitators may take a copy to help with writing up outcomes from the meeting on the meeting Wikipedia page. Any copies will be deleted once outcomes and notes are completed.
This is a monthly event running every 4 weeks, but double check the Aotearoa New Zealand Online page to confirm.

- Our next three-year funding submission to WMF is due in early March. Later this month we are having a business planning session to help us prepare. We ask for your ideas and suggestions for our next three years. Please get in touch if you have anything that you would like us to consider.
- To support our funding submission, we need good evidence about how we have spent the funding received in the previous period. We want the Community Activity Report for the current funding year to be in the best possible state by early March. Please have a look at m:Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand/Annual Community Activity Report 2025/26. If there is something useful we can add, please let us know or add it yourself.
- Our financial year for reporting as a registered charity is the calendar year, so we will now begin preparing our performance report for 2025. This report will be published prior to the Annual General Meeting later in the year. It will also be published on the Charities Services website.

If you’re an event organiser, don’t forget to add your event as a programme to the Campaign Dashboard July 2025 – June 2026. The Dashboard is a key tracking tool for reporting back to Wikimedia Foundation and will help us ensure that we get funding in future years. If you are unsure how to add programmes to the Campaign dashboard you can find further information here on how to create a new event dashboard and how to link it to the overall campaign dashboard. Alternatively contact: Ambrosia10 (talk) on her talk page for help.
If you’re interested in organising a Wiki event, Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand (WANZ) provides support funding. Contact info @ wikimedia.nz for more information on how to apply. It’s really simple – we promise!
- Wiki weekend Kaikōura 7-8 March 2026. It would be great to have more editors contribute to the project, and if possible travel to attend on 7-8 March.

- Discuss schedule of meetings for 2026
- Marshelec I have been working on a range of articles in support of the Kaikōura project. In particular, I have been developing: Draft:Whale Watch Kaikōura, and extending work I have been doing for some time on Draft:Biodiversity of the Kaikōura region. I have also made improvements to the main article about the town Kaikōura. There is a Wiki Weekend planned at Kaikōura on 7-8 May and it is hoped that a few experienced editors will attend. In other work, I have been trying to improve South Island, and in particular the history section. There is more still to do. I have created a new article Oriental Bay Band Rotunda using content split from Oriental Bay. I also have continued my contributions to keeping the Critter of the Week project site up to date.
- Ambrosia10 (talk) – I’ve been on a bit of a “go slow” as a result of festive season responsibilities and having family from the UK visiting. However I have been continuing to work on structured data on commons for files from the Biodiversity Heritage Library. Making good progress on multiple categories but there is just so much to do! I’ve also been working on the Biodiversity Heritage Library creator id dataset in Mix’n’match chipping away at those creators with no presence in Wikidata. BHL has also done another refresh ingestion of Wikidata QIDs and associated identifiers from Wikidata items and as a result have generated another identifier error report. This is over half the size smaller than the first error report but there are still 8,000 errors, some in Wikidata, some in the BHL catalogue. I’m gradually working my way through the Wikidata side of things but it is slow going. My WiR work will start again tomorrow and as a result of the two new Wikidata properties Collection Date and Specimen Classifier I am intending to start with the creation of Wikidata items for holotype specimens held by the New Zealand Arthropod Collection. These uploads will aid the subsequent upload of holotype specimen images, which will be done in batch form to aid the training of Leanne Elder in undertaking these types of uploads to Wikimedia Commons after the WiR position is finished. I’ve also been doing some general editing of Wikipedia, particularly adding images to articles and any related information. I note that several Department of Conservation threat classification publications have been released and as a result multiple species articles can have their NZ threat classifications updated.
